Making your own Halloween costume can be both a way to get your creative juices flowing and a way to save money. Given babies grow so fast there is no way their costume can be reused again by them, so secondhand and homemade are the way to go! (I definitely wore out my Belle costume as a kid. My Mom got her money’s worth.) Fabric markers and a secondhand onesie are the only things I bought for this Togepi costume, so the total for this costume was less than $20! The possibilities are endless for using fabric markers and a hat to create a costume. A brown onesie with marks to look like bark and leaves on a hat will make an adorable tree. Maybe you think your baby should be a king right away. Make a crown from felt like I did and use a royal purple onesie. Easy!
- white onesie
- soft skullcap
- fabric markers
- white fabric paint
- felt
- scissors, needle, thread, pencil
Launder your onesie if needed. Using your pencil, sketch out your design on the onesie. No matter the simplicity of your design, you’ll inevitably want to make changes. Using the red and blue markers, color in the triangle and squares. Carefully outline in black.
Move to the hat. Again using pencil, outline the top of the head of Togepi. You want the top of the crown to be roughly even with the top of the hat. The length of my crown is slightly less than 6 inches. Carefully cut out, ensuring the felt is cut as smoothly as possible. Line up the bottom of the crown with the bottom of the hat. Sew the two pieces together, and flip the crown up. I carefully sewed the middle of the sides of the crown to the brim of the hat, so as the threads will not be seen.
Draw an outline of the eyes in pencil. Using a black fabric marker, draw on the eyes. Using the white fabric paint, color in a dot in each eye. Now you have a cute costume and it took no time at all!
