I saw this nice candelabra on West Elm and loved it. However, I’m not an English aristocrat in an old house, and more often than not my husband and I eat at our kitchen island. So I decided to make one out of wood and candle cups for the one night a year I would really want a romantic centerpiece.
- 3 dowel rods
- 2 wooden candle cups
- craft rotary tool
- handheld saw
- superglue
- gold paint
Begin by making the base of the candelabra. I made the rods into a tripod shape, then marked with pencil where the rods would meet. This took some trial and error to find the shape I liked, I used some hair ties to play around with different configurations. Mark the areas where the dowel rods will meet with pencil. Then scoop out a semicircle from the wood with a rotary tool. Sand the area smooth.
Superglue the dowel rods together. Don’t superglue your finger to the rod like I did. If you do, acetone aka nail polish remover will save you.
This step isn’t necessary, but I sawed off the top part of the candle cups for a more modern shape. Glue to the dowel rods. Then after the glue has dried, paint gold, or whatever color you desire. I used gold spray paint that specified a clear top coat was not necessary, but if you use something else a clear coat could be needed.
