Sweater Weather Ornaments

Felt has been trending the past few seasons, and it’s no surprise why. People are craving a little warmth and coziness in their holiday decor. Maybe it’s because I’m getting older, but I definitely crave the colorful Christmases of the 80s and 90s. These ornaments can be customized any way you want; I tried a few different things-cut out letter, blanket stitch, and embroidery. I used felt from previous projects and embroidery thread that used to belong to my Grandma. This is a perfect project if you want to practice your embroidery stitches (as you can see mine aren’t perfect!) Put together in the time it takes to watch your favorite Christmas movie, you can make one for everyone in your family.

  • felt squares
  • thread, cotton and embroidery
  • scissors
  • sweater template

Start by cutting out two sweaters from the felt. Fold your felt in half and place the long straight line against the fold and cut. Embroider your design or letters on one sweater. I freeformed cutting the initial “A”, but you can also buy monogram letters for a fancier look. The purple sweater I sewed the two pieces together, for the green one I just did a blanket stitch to attach. I will say, it was difficult to pull the sleeves out from the purple one, but I do like the look. I also made the green one slightly bigger by placing the pattern about a 1/4 inch from the fold when cutting out. Using embroidery thread, make the hangar by knotting one end of a 5 inch piece of thread. Thread through a needle, and attach at the top by pulling through and knotting tightly.
