I’ve really gotten into dried florals lately as decor, as it has all the beauty of florals without the recurring expense. Dried floral wreaths are always for sale, but I’ve noticed a few patriotic ones made from what looks like baby’s breath this year. Baby’s breath is usually regarded as cheap filler, but dried and dyed it looks great. (Not all flowers dry well!) Dying the flowers turned out to be the time suck as I developed this project, as dying the water the desired colored took way longer than I remember from 3rd grade science class and did not have the desired vibrancy. Altogether, you can make this wreath from way less than the $120 price tag I’ve seen online.
- 6 bouquets of baby’s breath
- wire wreath form
- stars
- floral wire
- scissors
- acrylic paint (I used FolkArt multi-surface)
- spray bottle
- tarp, parchment paper (optional)
- Remove flowers from packaging. Lay out whatever you’re using to protect your belongings from the paint, and take apart and lay out the flowers as flat as possible.
- With the spray bottle, put about a tablespoon amount in the container and mix with about half a cup of water. You want the paint mixture to be on the thinner side. Spray the flowers lightly, more than likely you’ll need to do more than one pass to completely cover the flowers.
- Once dried, get you wire and form. Baby’s breath branches off helpfully from the main stem leaving about 4 inches of secondary stem. Cut off the main stem, and grab about 3 bunches of flowers. Wrap about 4 inches of wire around the bunches and the form. I like to twist both ends of the wire together and tuck to hide it. Move your way around the form, covering the previous wire.
- Once completely covered, glue your stars on. I used fabric stars and wood glue. Wooden stars could work, as long as they aren’t too heavy. Hang and enjoy!
