Salt Dough Coaster

Another idea if you are going for a low key Valentine’s Day this year, or if you have a child who wants to make something their parent might actually use. This coaster is huge, because mugs have gotten bigger but coasters have not. Made out of salt dough and using a heart cookie cutter, this is infinitely customizable for your sweetheart.

  • salt dough (2 cups of flour, 1 cup of salt, 1 cup of water)
  • cookie cutter (I have a cool one that has 4 different sides, great space saver)
  • acrylic paint and supplies
  • clear acrylic spray
  • baking sheet, aluminum foil
  1. Make your salt dough. Mix your dry ingredients together, then add the water until you get a grainy dough. Mixing this together was actually a great stress reliever.
  2. Roll out your dough to about 1/4 inch thickness. You can certainly make it thicker, just keep in mind that it will increase your bake time. Think about another 30 minutes for every 1/4 inch in thickness.
  3. Cut out your shapes. I used hearts and a circle cutter, arranging the hearts around the circle. Press the shapes together if needed. Place on your cookie sheet with the foil underneath. Bake for at least 30 minutes at 250 degrees. Your dough will puff up a bit an start turning a light brown when its done. I also air dried another little piece and I will say if it is at all humid where you are at expect it to take a long time, but I did like that it didn’t brown at all.
  4. Once your piece has cooled, paint it in your chosen design. I kept mine pretty simple, but I’m sure kids will want all the colors. I painted it all white at first and I really liked it just like that, reminded me of some whitewashed walls in a sunny Greek island.
