Lighted Cauldron Dupe, part deux

This fun Halloween decor has made the rounds several times on social media, but I thought I’d still take another stab at recreating it, using Christmas ornaments this time. I love the look of purple Halloween this year, so I painted the ornaments different shades of lilac and light blue, leaving some baubles completely clear. The result is something beautiful-and spooky.

  • cauldron ($13)
  • Christmas ornaments (great way to recycle chipped or outdated items
  • floral Styrofoam circle, 8 inch diameter 1 inch thickness is what I used ($8)
  • LED fairy lights, battery operated ($7)
  • purple craft foam
  • plastic beverage container ($6)
  • metal skewer
  • wire cutter, scissors, hot glue, old newspaper or tissue paper
  • optional: acrylic clear spray, paint, potion labels

First prepare the components of your cauldron. I sprayed the cauldron with acrylic to give it a shiny surface and painted the bottle black. Here is a link to free printable labels if needed. https://sunidoll.com/halloween-potion-labels-free-printable-miniature/. Paint your ornaments your desired color. I used Folk Art multi-surface paint, thinned with water.

Using a drill or X-acto knife, cut a small circle on the bottom of the cauldron. Thread the fairy lights up into the cauldron, leaving the battery pack outside the cauldron. Place balled up newspaper or tissue paper in the bottom of the cauldron. You can use whatever you want, the point is to give the Styrofoam something to lay on.

Cut the purple foam in a circle to cover the Styrofoam. Cut a small circle in the foam to thread the lights through, and place to the side. One at a time, wrap a section of the lights around your finger and place the lights inside the ornaments. Work your way around the cauldron, arranging the ornaments to your liking.

Once you like the way your bubbles look, take the skewer and stab securely into the foam. Wrap remaining lights up the skewer, leaving enough to stuff into the potion bottle. If desired, glue your ornaments in place. For myself with limited storage, I’ll probably take this apart to store the bubbles safely.

Use cloth to cover up the battery pack. A spooky black gauze would be perfect.

This looks awesome lit up. By the cauldron is a guide to drawing your own creepy cute I picked up. I’ve really enjoyed attempting the characters and even if you can’t draw, you can certainly trace!
